Shell in Australia is integral in every stage of the petroleum value chain – from the discovery, production and refining of oil and gas to the distribution, marketing and retailing of oil, gas and petrochemicals. Shells customers include individual farmers and small businesses to major industry and multi-national companies.
Shell wanted to capture the business controls data and actions within templates in a central location. Once the template was populated with controls process data it would enter workflow process. First level approval would undertake controls functions and then approve the template, prior to review through a secondary level quality control phase in order to ensure control actions had been undertaken correctly.
Shell’s needs were examined by Microsoft who introduced OBS into the engagement based on OBS’s previous work with Microsoft technology considered appropriate to meet Shell’s needs.
OBS devised and implemented a proof of concept solution to capture the business controls initial data within Microsoft InfoPath form templates. Using Microsoft InfoPath technology, different areas of the business were able to gain easy access to and leverage information required within Shell.
Understanding Shell’s need for easy access to templates and workflow of the templates, OBS created a Windows SharePoint Server document library providing Shell with a central form template library. To meet Shell’s Sarbanes Oxley compliance process Windows SharePoint Server was enhanced with Nintex SmartLibrary. Nintex SmartLibrary has given Shell business process automation of the workflow process which can be customised and is fully audited. This proof of concept solution is being evaluated by Shell beyond the original project scope.
